Intro to Voice Acting with Karen Strassman & Erica Mendez
As has often been said, voice acting is a lot more complex than just making a "funny voice." This panel is an introduction to the different elements in creating characters that can touch an audience, compel them, move them to tears, make them laugh, delightfully endear them to the character, or simply make them want to hear that voice over and over again. Karen Strassman and Erica Mendez will bring in examples of characters and typical voiceover audition copy, and members of the audience will be invited to come up to the mic and try their hand (...or their voice) at it!

Osamu Tezuka and Shigeru Mizuki: The Late, Great Pioneers of Modern Manga and Anime
Two postwar Japanese artists have significantly shaped the character, look and feel of modern manga and anime, and created iconic stories that every Japanese knows: Tezuka's half-robot "Astro Boy," and Mizuki's one-eyed Kitaro from "GeGeGe no Kitaro." Both creators experienced the horrors of World War II, which influenced their respective creative visions and gave them unique perspectives on Japan's postwar modernization. Tezuka expressed a faith in the future, pursuing science and technology as paths to world peace. Mizuki delved into the past, using traditional Japanese folk tales and ghost stories to understand the madness of modern life. We will explore the artwork and stories of these two major artists to discover how they influenced modern manga and anime to become so compelling and irresistible in our era.

Dance Party
Dance Party Rules
  1. No outside food or drink. This is OPCC policy. Water will be provided inside the dance.
  2. All you need to get in is your badge. Be prepared to show it to the volunteer at the door! It may be a long line, but if everyone cooperates and takes the time to go through one by one, we can check more quickly and get you in more smoothly than if a whole crowd rushes the doors.
  3. No bags are permitted in the dance. All bags must be left in a hotel room or vehicle. The volunteers at the doors of the Night Party will not watch bags or property, and are not responsible for property left outside of the Night Party unattended. This includes ALL bags, regardless of size. Store your purses, fanny packs, and clutches in your car or hotel room before you attend!
  4. Naka Kon's dress code and codes of conduct will be enforced inside the Night Party. The dress code can be found inside your program and will be available at the door. Large props are discouraged, as are the heavier forms of Poi and other fun (but potentially dangerous!) dance accessories. If you’re wondering what not to bring, ask yourself - if this accidentally hit someone, would it hurt them? Remember, this event is not age restricted. Keep it safe for our younger, smaller attendees you may not see while showing off your cool moves!
  5. If you cause a safety hazard with your props, you will be asked to remove them from the dance floor.
  6. Make it quick and easy for everyone at the end of the night. When the party is over, double check that you have everything you brought in! Please leave the OPCC promptly after the party, so that the staff can finish cleaning up and head home to their beds, too.

Life as an American in Tokyo
Tokyo is the world's most populous city, but it is also comparatively homogenous — populated mostly by Japanese who speak the same language, understand the same customs and modes of behavior, and often refer to non-Japanese as “outside people.” So what is it like to live there on a daily basis as a perpetual outsider, charmed by the culture, but unable to fully join it? Author Roland Kelts, who is half Japanese, recounts his experiences as an outsider/insider, and explicates a culture that remains attractively, and somewhat bewilderingly, foreign to most Americans and other non-Japanese — who are nevertheless eager to know more, visiting in record numbers and sometimes choosing to move there.

Charity Ball ¥

Naka-Kon cordially invites you to attend this year's Charity Ball! On Friday evening we will offer dance lessons for Naka-Kon attendees, and staff dancers will also be present to teach attendees during the event. This year we are pleased to include a photo-op area outside the ballroom. Feel free to bring your camera or phone to take a picture with our beautiful backdrop.

The Charity Ball is a ticketed event, with a cap of 800 attendees. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased through the website or at registration. All proceeds from the dance will go to Naka-Kon's chosen charities.

Please note, formal attire is required. See below for more information on dress code.

Charity Ball Highlights

Dance Cards

Each attendee will receive a dance card upon entering the ball. On each of these dance cards you’ll find descriptions. Find someone matching that description and ask them to dance with you. Following the dance, ask your dance partner to sign their name in that portion of your dance card with a pencil/pen.

Once you have a name for each description, give your dance card (with your name at the top) to a Staff Dancer to turn in. Names will be entered into a contest to be honored as part of the ball’s royal court. This will include a King (Ou), Queen (Joou), Prince (Ouji), and Princess (Hime). The royal court will also be presented with prizes and be asked to lead a dance toward the end of the ball.

Rose Exchange

During the ball, three dozen attendees will receive roses. We ask that you present that rose to someone you did not know before attending the ball. We ask that no one receive more than one rose, as it would be unfair. The purpose of this is solely to encourage people to mingle during the ball.

"Waltz to the Moon" Competition

Attendees are invited to partake in the first dance of the evening, which is also a competition. This contest will be the "Waltz to the Moon" dance, as seen in "Final Fantasy VIII". The winners will be chosen based on their accuracy and skill with this dance. Only the first 25 pairs will be allowed to enter, so be sure to sign up after entering the ball.

Staff Dancers

Naka-Kon staff members will be available to dance with attendees. They will be introduced at the beginning of the ball to help attendees identify who they are.

Should they be asked to dance, our staff members will say yes, so there is no fear of being turned down! Likewise, they may ask you to dance. You may say yes or no. Staff will also be available to teach you to waltz during the ball if you wish to learn.

Charity Ball Dress Code

For the Charity Ball, we encourage your cosplays and cross-plays! However, they must still follow the Naka-Kon and charity ball dress codes. (Remember that the dress code is gender-neutral.) Examples of appropriate cosplays and cross-plays include ball gowns, military dress uniforms, and historical costumes.

  1. All attendees must abide by the general dress code of Naka-Kon.
  2. Appropriate formal attire includes (but is not limited to):
    • Dresses, gowns, kimonos, Hanfu, saris, suits, tuxedos, kilts, etc.
  3. Shoes must be appropriately formal. This includes:
    • Dress shoes, oxfords, saddle shoes, high heels, shined boots, dance slippers, etc.
    • This excludes: Sneakers, Converse shoes, dirty boots, work boots, tactical boots, etc.
  4. Dresses, skirts, kilts, etc., are to be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee.
  5. Leather, latex and fur may be used as accents on clothing, but should not make up your main outfit.
  6. No glow stick bracelets or other light-up accessories.
  7. No mascot outfits, fur suits, wings, weapons, or anything else that can interfere with dancing.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact ConEvents@naka-kon.com.

Anime, Manga, Sushi, and Cosplay: How Japan Enchants the West
Japanese culture attracts Westerners in myriad forms. Anime and manga are loved by millions, many of whom seek to imitate the visual styles in their own artwork or to dress up as their favorite characters. Japanese food is considered one of the world's most sophisticated and healthy cuisines. Yet, 70 years ago, Japan was an enemy of the Western allies in World War II. What happened? This panel analyzes the elements of Japanese culture that Westerners find most appealing, from the minimalist elegance of its design and style to the libertarian playfulness of its sensibility. Ultimately, whether it’s the art of flower arranging (ikebana), the tea ceremony (chado/sado), karaoke, Hello Kitty, Pikachu, or cosplay, Japanese culture is participatory, interactive, and tailor-made for the 21st century. You make it happen.

Now you’re ready to add those final touches to your props to make them look more like works of art than chunks of plaster. Pros and Cons Cosplay will (figuratively) walk you through the aisles of the hardware store and help you choose sandpaper, primers, paints, and sealers to finish up those pieces. Participants have an opportunity to win a prop featured during the panel!
